The Summer 2024 Fondren Fellows team worked with local partners from the Texas Historic Cemetery Guardianship Association and the Burrell Chapel Baptist Church to learn about the history of this freedom colony and work toward preservation of the historic cemetery.
The research involved learning about the history of the nearby community of Snipe, which had a railway stop and a post office in the early 20th century. The railway stop was confirmed through a short mention in the Houston Post.
